column shift binding

Hey guys, I know this is a old question that has come up before. I didn't pay attention bacause I never had the problem. I have just aquired a 65 f-100 with the three on the tree. When shifting between 1st and 2nd you have to be very precise with the lever because it tends to jamb. I remember hearing of a bushing that wears out in the upper column? And possible binding of the shift linkage. Any help pointing me to a proper fix would be appreciated.
thanks, Lance

Lance, I'm not sure it's about worn out bushings, because they did it in 65. Developing a shifting technic, is what you'll have to develope. I used to have to keep a hammer in my truck so my wife could get someone to help her get the gears unstuck. Pushing it from first to second will usually do it for you.

I used a palm down method, lifting it out with the thumb, with a slight pull towards the wheel, allow the lever to fall on it's own towards the floor and then lift it into second. No problems ever. ;-)

Good Luck!

Lance, As long as you are sure the binding problem is in the column, I suggest you remove your column and do a bench overhaul. All the parts you will need are available (NEW)from parts suppliers like LMC, Dennis Carpenter, Bobs F-100's and several others. I pulled mine and replaced the bearings, Ts switch, horn brush, upper collar and other minor parts that were worn out. Total cost of all the parts was less than 100 bucks and worth twice that much in improved driving safety.

I agree with William. Remove it and rebuild it. Its not that hard. Watch how things come apart and it will work out ok. Remember everyone whos ever done one didn't know how until there first one was back together.
