Brakes on your 6.0 hauler

I just about have 80K miles on my truck and its time for its first set of brakes. What brakes are you running? I would like to hear your thoughts before I make a purchase. Obviously I have done pretty good with the OEM

The OE friction material used on the '05+ vehicles is a really good product and the '99-04s would have been better with it.

If you want to get the exact same product you have to ask the counter person for the warranty pads, which come in a regular cardboard box. The Motorcraft Super Duty pads are a good second, they come in a Motorcraft red box.

If you do a lot of towing at a heavy load and think you want a higher friction rating at hot temps, then the Hawk LTS pads are a good choice. They are a higher metallic content pad, so the cold brake friction is lower. They like heat.

Other then that, everybody has their favorites with lots of choices.

If I had an '06, I'd be putting the OE pads on.

Huh? 85K? I've got like 135K miles on my 05 and the brakes are still working great. I was wondering how long these things are going to keep going down the road without wearing out... Maybe I'd better get them checked out before my next RV tow road trip in October.

During development testing we could wear out Superduty brakes in 35,000 miles. In real life I can project out 150,000 miles, but change them out sooner. It all depends on how much energy you need to dissipate per 1,000 miles.

I know of one person in another forum who made it to 200k.

Maybe because I live in a rural area, I don't use the brakes as much. I suppose if I drove a lot in a place like Los Angeles, I'd be wearing them out sooner.

Yep, there are a couple of LA test routes.

San Antonio
New York City
Detroit
Dayton
Minneapolis
Denver
Phoenix

And a few more.

Philly and San Antonio are killers due to the short city blocks, slow speed. Lots of stops at low speed so no cooling air flow through rotor vanes. Much worse then canyon running. Energy dissipated per mile at temperature situation.

Well my brakes still have at least half the pads left. I was on dirt roads last weekend. So my squeak was probably due to dusty brakes. No pads needed at this time. Thanks Jack for your suggestions. I will probably get the Warranty OE pads you mentioned and put them on the shelve for future installation.
