Front hub work question
2) The little C clip on the end of the side axle that holds everything in, is this supposed to be spinning freely when finished? Or does a tight C clip mean something gone wrong? Any help would be appreciated! I try my best to stay clear of shops I try to do most of the work myself to keep my bank account a float
You have the newer axle that is the large one. So your going to need
the larger tool.
When ready to put it back together you first want to do the updated dust seal.
Here is a video from SrMasterTech showing the seal installation.
The next step before you put the axles back in would be to clean the shafts if you did the updated
dust seal. Then place axle in a vice stub axle sticking up and set the vacuum seal on and place the
seal driver on top and then beat the ever living snot out of it to seat the seal. It's a tight fit and
the sealant on the inner circumference (lt green I think) tends to make it harder to drive it. Next step
after you have cleaned the inside of the knuckle where the seal will rest. You start to guide the
shaft into place after applying some grease for the dust seal so it does not snag. As you get the vacuum
seal near the knuckle you want to place the seal driver over the stub axle and use it to guide the axle
into the knuckle and seat the seal. The driver has a stop and that should rest on the outer edge of the
knuckle. One thing I found is it helps to use your hand to support the axle on the back side of the knuckle.
The reason is I found that the U-joint tends to not allow you to clear the inner rim of the seal bore.
Just a little lift and the seal should slide into home.Once that is done place the new yellow O-ring on the
bearing with a little grease and slide that into the bore. Torque bolts in an "X" pattern. Now comes the
snap-ring. It should seat fully into the grove of the axle. If it seems you don't have enough clearance
check to see that the axle is pulled back to the outside so that the stub is pushing on the back side of the
bearing. That should give you more room to seal the snap-ring in it's grove.
Here is a set of videos from SrMasterTech.
This 2nd one is more where you at on the installation part. But both can teach a lot.
SrMasterTech (Rusty) passed away last winter. He left us a lot of good stuff in the videos.
Other than the videos by SrMasterTech you may also want to watch the
ones from DieselTechRon. He passed away last spring.
If you run into anything just ask and someone will answer.
