Ok, so I have read all the write ups on changing the tranny fluid in my Ex, but I happened to look in my manual last night and noticed that it says to check the dipstick for which fluid to use and my dipstick actually says use Mercon, not Mercon V. Should I still stick wtih Mercon V as long as I am doing a complete replacement of the fluid? FYI, the truck is a 2000 V10. Let me know your thoughts. Is there a chance that since my truck is a 2000 that it has an earlier transmission than the 4R100 and thus would require just Mercon instead of Mercon V?
Mercon no longer exists. Mercon V is the one you want.
PS - I learned that on this forum...
Thanks! It's a good thing because I ordered 22 qts. of Mercon V at Advance Auto because it is on sale right now for $5.00/qt, or was when I placed the order.
Yep, no more MERCON, it's MERCON V for our 4R100 transmissions now, buy a few more quarts and flush the power steering while you are playing with the red fluid.
Also has updated the transfer case (assuming your EX is 4X4) from MERCON to the new XL-12 T-case fluid.
Edit: now having a second look at your avatar picture and your solid front center caps I guess you won't need any XL-12.

In 2000 MERCON was the right fluid for the 4R100 in your truck. In 2006 Ford discontinued MERCON and changed MERCON V to be compatible with older transmissions that used to use MERCON. They didn't go back and change dipsticks in everybody's trucks when this happened.

Mercon-V works well in a 2000.
for the steering:
Pull of the return hose from the power steering fluid reservoir, cap the reservoir and hang the hose in a bucket. Start engine for about 2 seconds. refill reservoir, start again for 2 secs, repeat till nice clean fluid comes out of the return hose.
Also turn steering wheel in the 2 seconds.
easiest job in the world and the fluid has likely never been changed before.
is the xl-12 motorcraft? where can it be bought? im changing my transfer case fluid soon.
You can get the Motorcraft XL-12 online https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Ford-.../dp/B001H1K6TQ. Or at a dealer, maybe even a local auto parts store, I know the local parts houses by me carry different brands of this fluid.
I'm not an expert by any means, but from what I recall it has something to do with the XL-12 playing better with some yellow metal in the TC. Historically it was the same MERCON (original and later V) that the TC got, but I think there was growing concerns about something in the V having long term compatibility issues with the yellow metals.
