2004 5.4 Fuel Pump

My truck seems to have a healthy diet for fuel pumps. It eats one about every 2 years. Anyone else have this problem?

I don't tow that much with it. I will pull my boat to put it in the water, and then pull it out of the water at the end of the year.

Daily commute is about 12 miles each way to work and back.

It has a leveling kit and 35s on it. Stock gears.

Mileage on it right now is 175,000 give or take a few miles.

It has a y pipe, and flow master muffler with a high flow cat on it.

Other than that it is stock.

Took it to Ford today to put it's 4th fuel pump on it.

It doesn't throw a code, and it usually only happens after it has been driven for awhile. Meaning it usually doesn't do it on the way to work, but when I head home it will start acting up.

I know my Ford service guy buy first name.

I just dropped it off 2 days ago and had it serviced. They replaced the fuel filter and said they couldn't get it to act up and it wasn't throwing any codes and fuel pressure was good.

2 days later I am dropping it back off again.

This truck is driving me nuts.

Could be a bad ground causing it.
Could be low fuel, IF you have a habit of running the tank down, that puts the hurt on the pump and can fail it fast.
Bad connections can cause the electric to heat up and fail the pump also.
Dirty fuel is something else that causes it.

Thanks for the reply Mike.

I do run my tank down. I fill up once a week, typically every Thursday. I usually top it off with 24 gallons of fuel when I fill it up, so it is not dry.

I always hit the same gas station on the way home from work, it is a midway point and has the best price on gas. So if it is low it isn't low for long. Maybe I will fill up a day early and keep the light off as well as trying another station.

I will let my service guy know to check the ground on the fuel pump to make sure there is no corrosion.

Cheers.

The pumps use the fuel to stay cool, by running it low it cant stay cool.

If you run until the light comes on you are running too low. Doing so too many times and the pump goes away, it doesn't just need enough fuel to pump but it needs to be submerged in fuel for cooling. They will be okay if that happens occasionally but not on a frequent basis.
