2000 Ford Explorer with the 302. Just brought it home, it has been sitting for about 7 years with 1/4 tank regular grade fuel. It starts right up when I use starting fluid, but otherwise cranks for a while before firing and will only idle for a few seconds. It sounds fine when it does idle...also will stall when I step on the gas even a little bit. I put 5 gallons of high test, as well as Lucas fuel system cleaner in it hoping to clean it out. The gauge is reading 1/2 tank now that I've added fuel...and it doesn't start any better or run any longer. Changed the fuel filter -- no better.
Any suggestions for the next step? Fuel pump? Something else?
Any ideas guys? Thank you!!
I would suck all the fuel out and start over. You might be able to use a hand pump thru the fill hole.......... or pull off the fuel filter and use the key to run fuel pump to check flow and pump out the old gas. At least pull the filter, pump out a 1/2 gallon into a bucket and look at it..
Do you know if this is the same reason it's sat for 7 years? If so, I'd suggest you start by measuring the fuel pressure. If that's good, empty the tank as mentioned above and try with fresh fuel. If there's fuel pressure but it's not up to specification, drop the tank, dump out old fuel, replace the fuel pump, reinstall, and fill with fresh fuel. If there's no fuel pressure, then make sure the fuel pump inertia switch to the right of the passenger side front footwell is not tripped, then check for voltage to and through the switch.
That stale gas is killing you. Obviously volatile fuel will cause it to run great ( starting fluid ) but bad gas won't. Imagine how much water has collected in the tank over 7 years, especially with the alcohol in today's fuels! You need to clean that tank out completely, get rid of all the bad gas and varnish that will clog up ( potentially ) the filter sock on the fuel pump if it hasn't already. Get the tank cleaned out and put a new filter and fuel pump in it and I bet it runs like a champ. ( fuel pump replacement is never a bad idea anyway ).
