Low Fuel Surge

I was nearly home and let my 6.4 run below zero miles to empty for a few miles. Just as I turned up my road with a tenth of a mile to go, my engine started surging. It did this once before shortly after it was new and I let the fuel get really low.

Both times, as soon as I refueled, it returned to normal operation. I thought perhaps this was a designed in warning so that one never ran it completely out of fuel. Others are saying it's not and that it actually will shorten the life of my pump and or injectors. It's got 121,000 miles on it now and still going strong.

My question then is two-fold: Is this action designed to allow one to get to fuel or is it not and if not is it detrimental to the life of my fuel system?

It does have a safety at so low of fuel. However you are risking damage to the HPFP and injectors allowing to get that low. If you do cause the damage it can quickly become a $10,000 repair. Keep your tank above 1/4 tank is my advice.

The fuel gauge getting close to the E is designed to let people know they are low on fuel and need to fill up lol. Sorry couldn't resist.
Your high pressure fuel pump is lubricated by the fuel going through it.....therefore no fuel and or air mixed with the fuel going through this pump is very very very bad for it. There are extremely close tolerances in the high pressure fuel pump that need constant lubrication.

Agree with the 2 previous posts. Fill up when at 1/4 tank. Air in fuel system VERY BAD! Did you drain the fuel/water separator? Change fuel filters? You may have sucked up some dirt running the tank that low.

When you change the fuel filters, you need to cycle the key a half dozen times listening to the pump building pressure before starting it. I would suspect doing the same if you run it out of fuel would be advisable as well.
