Hello, I was wondering, is it legal to have a potable CB? Cause I thought it was, atleast back then! Thanks

I bought a hand held one with a magnet mount external antenna just to take on vacation so I could here what truckers had to say if there were any traffic tie ups, etc.

My son got a deal on a 6 pack of midlands with chargers through Amazon about a year ago, not sure what model but he takes them with him when he leaves for his army reserve unit, he passes them out to the the truck drivers in the convoy so they can all stay in contact with one another. When they were in Canada last year on a joint UN mission, the convoy got separated because of mechanical failure, he said he was able to stay in contact for about 30 miles before signal started breaking, I thought that was pretty good.

Been looking at the Midland 75-822, sounds like it's a pretty good model!

Depends where...

Some locations, CB's fall under distracted driving/hands-free laws (like Ontario, Canada).

Short answer, OP - depends on your location...

I am trying to wrap my head around that. Why would you want to put a CB in a pot? And why would it be illegal?

I don't have a whole lot of time here this evening, but do a search here on my username and CB, radio, RF, antenna, what ever other key radio-related terms you can think of. You will find a lot of information.

There was question about the glass mounted antennas. These work on capacitive coupling. They are about the worst antennas you can get.

A friend of mine did a neat install of a Firestick type CB antenna to his Ranger's hood - it went on the opposite side as where the OEM AM/FM radio antenna was. It looked factory installed and works well.

The most efficient vehicle mounted antenna is a 102" whip mounted on a hard mount in the center of your roof. That is impractical, however.

Wilson makes some nice magnet mount antennas. I have a 1000 these days. It is great for what I need - temporary, I can throw it up when I want it, take it off when I don't, throw it on the rental car, etc. The difference at 4 watts between a 1000 and a 5000 is pointless.

I have a magnet mount on my little Toyota It always received fine, but every time I try to use the mic, (according to my son) all anyone hears is high pitched feedback. Are the magnet mount antennas adjustable?
