Getting my cab back from paint this week. Anyone know where to get the "not plastic" firewall blankets, guessing no longer made. Anyone doing something different on the firewalls? Whats with the plastic ones? See pic from supplier below. Thanks
I'm planning on having a local saddle maker make me a firewall blanket out of leather. About 1/8" thick - and it would not be a huge piece. Some leathers stiffen after they are dampened. I need a firewall from a truck to form it on. Then dye it black and spray glue some insulation on the backside. It would look very genuine if done right - would hold up better than the original material and have a good level of fire retardant and heat protection.
Just something I've been mulling over. There are lots of saddle makers in the area here. I live in an area called Bridle Trails. The Bridle Trails state park just to my North is something like 480+ acres, dedicated to horseback riding and hiking.
A person could sew the retaining strip along the bottom edge and die-cut the holes for things.
Hmmm. Well, Thats one way to go for sure. I'm not 100% sold on having to be authentic, but really don't understand plastic. I could see a roll of material you make yourself or whatever but...!!!
The plastic facing the interior of the cab has some groves, not exactly like the original cardboard. The shape and contours fit the cab/firewall metal very well.
I was pretty happy with the one I got fr my '65. It had the fabric backing and a strip of rubber sewn in at the bottom, like my original.

Purchased same/similar many years ago, pleased with the purchase, fit very well, and the pad included 'knock out' holes for routing cables, wiring, etc. In my case, installed carpet and had the shop set the edge under the lip of the firewall pad, once the heater assembly were installed, IMO, not much left of the Firewall pad to see.
Seem to recall earlier model Ford trucks, up to 60, there are a few Ford part supplier's who offer a 'sound and heat' barrier pad, pre-cut' for the cowl; not sure if it would be a suitable alternative to the ABS; as usual, not offered for the 61-66. The sound, and/or heat barrier can be purchased in bulk for the 'do it yourselfter' by width and length, possibly another way to go?? Anyhow, food for thought??

ABS plastic?<br/>
Anyone know the difference between the 2x4 and 4x4 cabs firewalls that they offer 2 different ABS firewall pads?
I purchased a ABS firewall pad from Macs, for the 2x4, but my cab is currently being sandblasted and worked on, so I cannot check its fitment but it looks nice and the padding on the back is nice.... seems to be a hole in the middle (that is not present in the 4x4 one) that I do not remember anything going to the firewall there
I think the difference might be the heater outlet holes. I ordered one and had to send it back due to holes being in the wrong place. The holes were side to side like the 65-66 trucks use rather than up and down like the 61-64 models.
I think they look good and seem to fit fine from what everyone says - they just don't look original. I could walk up to any truck and tell in a second as could any of you. The original material had no grain to it, so the grain alone makes it stick out like a sore thumb to me, let alone that it is plastic.
