A friend of mine said he would help me put my engine back in after a rebuild. He claims it would be easier to install the bell housing first. The truck is a 1977 4x4. Is that a standard practice?

Not standard.
What is the reasoning behind his recommendation as to "easier"? Lack of a "wobble" socket adapter?
I guess because you can make sure the lever is on the throwout bearing. Not sure what a wobble socket is. I have a clutch alignment tool and a level adjuster for the hoist.
Standard practice in my opinion...I've always installed as much as possible (including bellhousing) BEFORE putting engine back in. much easier than laying on your back trying to start/tighten bolts...and required if your trans is still in the truck. :-)
My opinion, not only put the bellhousing on the motor out of the truck, but slide the trans on to. Put it in as one assembly, much easier to align everything out in the open. Then slide your transfer case on once its in the truck.
Doing so will result in more chance of knocking off the throwout bearing from the clutch fork cuz now it require threading the input shaft through the bearing and then into the back of the crank.
With the bell on the trans, all ya gotta mind is splining the trans input shaft.
We put the bell housing on first - I think if I had it to do over again, I would have put the bell housing on the engine. The truck is 4x4 with a married tranny so I didn't want to take the tranny out.
