OK this is my first time pulling an engine. I know my way around a garage but need some help. I have a 292 with a 4 speed trany. When I pull the motor do I unbolt the trany from the bell housing or unbolt the bell housing from the motor. It looks to me like there is nothing to hold up the trany if I unbolt the bell housing from the tany. I guess I wasnt sure how to support the trany if I pull the bell housing with the engine. It looks like unbolting the engine from the bellhousing is the cleanest way but I wasn't sure it if was the right way.
Taking the engine off at the bellhousing will probobly be your easiest bet. While you are under there unbolting the bellhousing put a jack with a board against the oilpan. This is a simple safety thing.
Pull your starter and disconect all the wires and lines to the engine. lift up a bit on the cherry picker to take the weight. Pull the front bolt and the jack under the pan and start trying to seperate the engine and bell.
Save yourself some hell later and replace the clutch now.
I agree with flip.. I just did this this past week myself but with a 352 w/ 4 speed. I didn't take the bell housing off for the tranny but I should have. When I was pulling the motor out it was hitting on the firewall and I kind of had to pry it out.
Take our advice and pull the bell housing first. Oh yeah, and do put a jack under the motor somehow, like flip said will work, and make sure you have either another jack or someone helping you pull the tranny. It's not light when you're under there by yourself.
It has been years since I pulled a 292, but IIRC the mounts on the bell housing are the only mounts for the tranny so you need to support the rear of the tranny, I mever had to remove the core support but remove the radiator for sure.
Remove the transmission, then remove the engine and bell housing together as one piece, The transmission has no mount and comes out easily with four bolts.
This method produces no stress on the transmission input shaft. The 292 will not slide forward on the mount as it has the front single point so it is difficult to remove with the bell not attached.
If you do it by removing the engine From the bell you still need to crawl under and remove the trans form the bell and still have the bell to remove from the front.
As always, you guys are right on and aren't afraid to help the new guy. I pulled the tranny and it was smooth sailing after that. Now for the fun stuff.
So now I have a question on the rocker arms. Is there anything to be concerned with in removal. My book is a little vag on the quesiton. It mentioned something on the oiler tube. What does a guy have to do or be aware of when pulling this off.
Also, what can I reuse, or is it a case of total replacement. When I took off the valve covers the area was dry as a bone. I assuemed I could reuse the arms but not the shafts. Or is it better just to order a new one?
