Hi guys, I'm new here so bare with me.. I recently bought a used 08 escape from a car dealer, this thing runs tit! I absolutely love this vehicle. My only question is how well are the transmissions actually? I read a lot of scary reviews about these... This currently has 111,xxx miles. Regular services, (I'm 3rd owner) trans fluid doesn't smell burn and isn't real dirty looking. So I noticed sometime randomly when I let it coast like from down a small hill and start up the next incline and I ever so slightly give it gas the trans will "slam" as it down shifts... Its not like "oh my god the trans fell out" but you can feel it, also this doesn't slip around any corners or while driving. In fact it shifts and drives awesome except those random down shift episodes. So I called my local ford dealer and asked them what they think if me changing fluid and they said do it asap. Not sure if its ever been changed or not. What do u guys think??? I want the filter replaced but not tearing into trans. What do you think if I were to get new fluid, drain old, install new drive it for a couple miles or a day and re change it as kinda a "hillbilly" flush??
Clean fluid never hurt anything. I don't recall my SIL's '05 every having bad manners in the trans department, and I don't recall anything like you describe. You might try to have codes read on the transmission. Code readers that actually read trans codes are many times at the dealer only, but I could be talking old info there.
Does the '08 also have a CVT style trans also? On my wifes '12, its said to have it but the gear shifting feeling is still there although it has that "rev-up then go" feeling that goes with CVT. (Which I hate!)
