92 idi fuel problem?

Ok yall just got a 92 idi and when i got it it had a 1\4 tank of fuel. Immediately filled to a little over 3\4.. Once it ran out the 1/4 it still runs great but on startup it surges (up to about 900rpm and drop to about 500) on idle, and actually stalled out once. It will surge as soon as 5 minutes after shutting it down.it only lasts about 5-10 seconds. When it stalled it took a few tries of cranking to fire again. Im thinking it acts like it is loosing prime. Havnt had a chance ro check anything out yet but just wanted to get some of yalls ideas.. And sorry for the book.

Could be a lot of things, but what immediately comes to mind is the "cone of failure." Check it out on this forum, it's covered a lot.

2nd the cone of failure. You're 'out' of fuel again.... Fill it back up and see what happens.

Ok guys got a chance to look at it after work today. Think i found my problem pretty easily. Hard lines running under cab by brake line is leaking. Not sure if return or supply but is a pretty fair size leak.. Second question being do yall know what diameter the steel lines are on these trucks. Figure just be easier to replace the rough spots now instead of fighting again later on.

I replaced almost all of my fuel lines. The stock lines and design of the system is way too convoluted. Now the only thing stock on my fuel lines are the hoses from the tank to the fuel selector. the rest is just typical diesel-rated rubber fuel hose that I put in.

I forgot, also, I got rid of the stock diesel filter too, and got something much better and simpler.
