coolant overflowing??

Hi all,

I have a 2002 excursion and every time I try to put the coolant at the min level cold, it overflows through the cap until it is about 1.5-2 inches below the min level. Then it stops. I just did the oil cooler seals last night because I had a little oil in the coolant. Same thing happened this morning - overflowed again.

Any thoughts?

Don't worry about it. Most of trucks seem to want to stay at that level and are perfectly fine. I know mine does...........

Cool thanks. This forum is great but it gets you thinking about all the things that might cause it. I was thinking I need injector cups because I read that a leak there could over pressurize the cooling system and cause this. Truck has 156k on it. Was not looking forward to doing those just yet!

I wonder if its because they decided to just reuse the same bottle as the gas trucks? The fill level marked on it is probably tailored to the other motors.

I do recall hearing about stickers that were sent out to reflect the coolant levels the 7.3 likes to stay at (low on the bottle like yours, mine and numerous others). I would leave it at that level and as long as there is no soot or diesel in your degas bottle you should be good to go.

cool thanks! I had a nice brown sludge in my coolant filter that I attributed to oil - hence the oil cooler seals being done yesterday. Here is what my coolant filter looked like:

That's pretty bad, I'd keep a close eye on it.

I plan to. Those pics are from mid-July. I put a new coolant filter on at that time (duh - cut open the old one). I cut that one open last night and it looked much better. I also flushed the system and put new red ELC and distilled water in.
Here are the pics from the one last night:

My coolant likes to stay below the "min" mark also.

Another Excursion owner here. My coolant level drops below the Min line and holds solid. I added coolant for months and finally left it alone. It has been consistent for a year. I'm not messing with it again.

Same here, below the minimum and holds once it finds the happy place. I did have a very slow leak at the billet thermostat housing that took nearly a year to find, but fixed that with some sealant and all has been well since.
