Trans lines for 5R110

I've been lurking around for a while and at least attempting to do my due diligence in searching, but couldn't find what I needed so I thought I'd just ask.

I'm getting ready to take my 04 F250 6.0 PSD down for the usual (studs, egr, etc) and while I am doing this, I want to replace my rusted transmission cooler lines. It looks like the factory lines are routed such that I would have to lift the engine to replace them with factory lines.

I figured that maybe it would be a good idea to replace them with braided lines and AN fittings. Does anyone know what sizes I would need? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Don't go smaller than 1/2" ID.

Any idea on the fittings? I'm assuming I'll need ones on the trans, TP filter, radiator, and cooler.

Most transmission lines are 5/16 or 3/8 diameter. I would go with 3/8 which would equate to a -6 line.

I would suggest spending the extra money and go with a stainless steel braided teflon line verses any of the braided rubber lines. The teflon is impervious to most all fluids and has a higher burst pressure alone with less prone to heat or sun/uv damage.

There are two types of fittings sealing angles. Automotive is 45* and aircraft is 37*. Which ever one you select, try to not mix unless the fitting is designed for both angles.

You will probably need to determine if you can find a fitting that will screw into the radiator and transmission if applicable. If you have transmission lines that are clipped into the radiator or transmission, then you will need to adapt the braided line connector to a stub line on each end. You can go with either a double flare type connector or a compression type connector. I prefer the double flare. Also, the double flare is less prone to splitting than the single flare.

FYI....each increment of the dash number is approximately equal to 1/16 of an inch. A -8 would be 8/16=1/2", -5 = 5/16, -6 = 6/16=3/8".

This is the style of hose i would use

I had my mechanic replace them with a set I purchased from Ford. One thing he mentioned was he needed a special tool to remove the lines as the normal tool for fuel lines won't work. He had to get the tool specific to Ford.

There's some uninformed, really bad advice.

The stock lines are 1/2" diameter. You're going to have problems, such as an overheating transmission and possibly a dead transmission if you follow this bad advice.

Now now Mark...are you talking ID or OD sizes. As you well know they are not the same. Usually a 1/2" OD line is approx 3/8" ID. I may not have stated it, but most lines AN tubing is measured ID not OD.

I have been researching and ran across this thread. Mark is the transmission guru BUT The 5R110W hard lines under my 6.0 Excursion are 1/2” OD/ 3/8” ID. The hose that connects the trans cooler to the radiator are 1/2” ID so I am replacing all of it with braided stainless Summit 8AN PTFE hose and Summit AN fittings. I have a Sam Wyse Stage 2 transmission being built right now and will be installing her in a couple of weeks when she’s delivered. 2008 filter upgrade, PML aluminum pan, DieselSite external filter with toilet paper filter delete. I guess I will be doing a transmission install with upgraded lines thread to add to the engine rebuild since there is basically nothing online that covers fitting sizes, hose length etc. for people wanting to do a custom hose and useless bypass filter delete on the 5R110W.

Smack daddy,Did you ever figure out your fittings and lines on that truck. Hate to bring back a dead post but searched and couldn’t find your other install post. In the process of a fummins build and can’t find many solutions to go with for braided transmission lines.
