I got something that looks like this. It was $35-$40 and covers me on a lot of stuff like household plumbing, swimming pool, car and truck applications. Many times it's more of a hassle to make the trip to ACE than it is to buy the $.50 O-ring. Large O-rings that the pool supply store wants $15 for the guy gives me for free because it costs more to do the paperwork than the $1 the O-ring costs. I asked about different applications and he told me that there are only a couple of applications where special compounds are necessary for the O-rings. I use 'em and have no problems, even in the chlorine harsh pool environment.
What are those o-rings made of? Are they suitable for diesel?

I asked the guy at the store where I bought them and he said that they are suitable for all except for some rare occasions where nasty chemicals are involved. I have often heard that different compounds are needed for different applications but he said it's not so.

He would be very wrong ad what you have heard is true. There are many different types of material used for orings and seals and some work wonders with several fluids but not with others
Here's a link to some general types and what they work for.

Viton seems to handle most of what an automobile uses but not everything.
That's good information there, maybe what he sold me was Viton and it covers my applications, it doesn't say on the box. I'm not so sure I'd want to use them on brake calipers though.
