Ignition Key Chime

Ok, I have had my new to me 2003 E150 Chateau for 6 months now, I am loving it, after 29 years driving Chevys.

I am currently going to upgrade rear springs with Hellwig Helper springs, and add a rear sway bar.

The most annoying thing about it is the damn ignition key chime when the keys are in and I have the door open.

I have looked for the chime so I can unplug it, but I can't find it, can someone here help me to locate or otherwise disable the annoying chime?

Thanks, Wopper

Some years ago, for reason unknown, that chime started when I was driving down the road, for days it'd just come on, don't know why, or why it stopped, always hated it, want to disconnect it, I exit the side door, so it doesn't affect me, I've left my key in a time or two because no chime on that door.

Remove your dog house engine cover. Look near upper left corner of opening (behind and to lower right of 12v Cigar lighter. Open door with key in ignition and you can feel the bell box when it rings. Simply unplug the connector on back and you are done! That way you can plug it back in if you sell it. If you do it this way, your reminder buzzer will not come on when you leave your headlights on though. Cheers!

Just FYI, on my 2009 E350 (v10) this is not the location of the door/ignition/headlamp chime... the backup chime was what I found instead and it was (with doghouse removed) was basically to the left side of the doghouse and mounted on the right side of the steering column. I did not want to completely disable it, but I did put a piece of tape over it to quiet it down.... the ignition chime is somewhere on or above the steering column - going to search a few more threads.

On that year E-Series the Ignition key chime might be disabled through the CAN-bus system so before wearing yourself out looking how to defeat it by unhooking wires etc check into having someone access that network and disabling that function. (Its tied into the instrument cluster.)

You could also remove the small connector in the steering column inside the ignition lock cylinder recess. That's by far the easier way. Here's an image of that bit:

I did find that wire and disconnected it from the harness up underneath the dash (Black w/pink strip on mine)... It did stop the chime when the door is open and the keys are in the ignition, but it still chimes (SIX long chimes) when I start the car.... GRRRRRR!

I'm trying to post a photo that I labeled and photo-shopped showing this wire, but I must be doing something wrong? EDIT:I figured it out - Apparently unless you are a paid premium member you cannot upload directly from your device :-( Sorry, tried to share what I found....

You can't disable that sound---its there to show the CAN-bus network is self-testing to assure all connected modules are communicating. Its normal.
