Just an update. There was a peg pressed into the handle rod that prevented the rod from rotating far enough to gain access to the lead ball at the end of the cable.
The peg was in the small hole and the lead ball from the cable was in the larger hole.

I did a search to try to find and answer to my parking brake question and this thread came closest to answering it, but I'm still having a problem. My truck is a 1960 F100 and I'll try my hardest not to try anyone's patience too much, but here's a newbie question: What's the step-wise procedure to remove the parking brake cable and install a replacement?
The problem is that the cable is frayed and kinked before the firewall (see photo) and it won't move in any direction.
I removed part#2814, the clip retains the cable near the firewall and I tried to move the cable from both ends and it's stuck. I did find the peg on the parking brake lever part#2859 and the peg won't budge.
Since I am unsure how to handle this situation, I thought it best to stop at this point and ask for advice. I'm currently using bricks as parking brake.
Thanks
There's 4 bolts holding the ebrake handle bracket (2 at firewall, 2 at dash). The clip at firewall in engine compartment. I also disconnected the ebrake cable under the truck for slack. The peg was pressed in, I used plyers and twisted it out. I don't know if this was the correct way but it worked for me.
Hope I can get the peg to stay in when I put it back together.
Thanks for the help! I will follow your instructions.
Do you think if I heat the peg first with a torch that it would be be easier to remove? I'm also concerned about getting the peg to stay fasten once I replace the cable.
Let me know how you did it!
