Parking Brake Replacement

Trying to replace the parking brake assembly. What is the trick to getting the cable disconnected from the handle rod? Does that pin in picture #2 need to be punched out so I can rotate the rod around?

See the pic. If you push up here, you will be able to push the e-brake handle in another 1/2" or so, which will allow you to get the ball on the end of the cable out.
