So any advice before I cut up the black plastic covering the mounting brackets on my step bars, so I can mount the lights from the factory running boards?
I removed the lights with wiring harness from the factory boards thinking I could mount the lights up in the area where the steps attach underneath, but when I started looking there is a big enough gap to fit them in these plastic covers if i notch out the top with a dremel. Any thoughts? I had thought about LED strips, but this option is no cost, and I can upgrade to LED bulbs.
Just holding this on with electrical tape to get an idea of how it would look. Thinking one on the front mount and the other on the rear mount. Appreciate any feedback, I know y'all like to spend money, but not much in the budget right now. Thanks
I stuck cheap $10 LED strips from AutoZone under each door and spliced them into the OEM harness myself. Cheap, easy, still working almost 4 years later, and hidden away from sight.
They're pretty dang bright, they throw a lot of light on the ground too. I imagine you'd get even more since your steps are narrower than mine and don't tuck all the way into the body. They're just the 10 or 12" white strips, $10/ea so $40 for the whole shebang. At least they were when I did it.
Damn son, you still have some Iron Cross steps in a box?
Attempted install four times, too much seized hardware on the originals to make it clean by the deadlines. I intend to keep the lights, so I need to gut the wiring harnesses out of the stock boards and its holding me up
Also that pic is pretty old, I was still active duty when I installed the lights and I got out in 2014.
When mine was new, I too installed LED strips (in blue) under each door (on the rockers). They're not visible but they put a nice glow out when the dome lights are on. I can post pics if anyone wants to see...
Since I already had the wire harness removed from the old boards, I was able to add some LED bulbs, $7.99 for a two pack at O'Riellys, so for $15 and change I now have lights, it's not right on the step, so we will try it for a bit and see if it works out. From the pics looks like I now need to upgrade to LED interior lights.
