Fan clutch

My 79 Ford f100 has, I believe an 85 302 with a roller motor. I just reverse cleaned the coolant and everything looks coolant tight. Installed a thermostat the right way. So I got stuck in traffic and the
temperature shot up. Looks like no fan clutch. Anyway, I never had a problem with stalling because of heat before now. And I wonder if someone could explain to me the logic of a fan clutch? My truck is automatic. The fan runs all the time since out appears there is no clutch As in three photo. Once i get going on the freeway, the temp indicator goes down to normal. Higher revs give a bigger blast of air. I also read when the fan runs unnecessarily, you can lose hp and mileage. But still, when the car is crawling along at low revs, the fan isn't going to run any faster even with a fan clutch, hence the puzzled look on my face. Can't figured this one out. I know I need a shroud. How do yu like the big new radiator?

I would recommend that you install a fan shroud.
With the fan "open" it can draw air from around the radiator rather than through it. At highway speed, there's more than enough ram effect to force air through the radiator rather than around it. At low speeds and stopped, there's no ram effect and you're depending entirely on the fan to pull air through the radiator.
On quality fan clutches, they're temperature sensitive and if needed can actually overdrive the fan above pulley speed.

2X... that fan is too far away from the rad to have reasonable effectiveness.

yes, run a shroud and space the fan so no more than one-half the pitch depth is within the extent of the shroud.

Don't put a clutch on it if you're having cooling problems.

I replaced my solid fan with a clutch fan, to try to improve MPG. I think it did slightly, but my temp would climb higher sitting still. Up around 210-215.

I didn't like that, or the extra weight of the fan clutch hanging off the water pump. So I replaced the fan and fan clutch with a flexAlite flex fan. Stays cool no matter what again, and looks cool with the blue and silver. I don't quite know if it hurt the mpg or not. As I haven't been driving much over the summer.

You need a fan shroud....
