My wife lost the keys to our 2008 F-250. The dealer quoted me a price of 100.00. When she had the truck towed there the price changed to 177.00, now they say due tot he fact that the truck has had to many keys cut for it they had to wipe it clean and cut a new key at the new price of 201.00.
Does this sound right or is this a rip-off I'm going to pick it up to day so any quick feed back would be very helpful and thank you in advance.
So, these keys are chipped, right, and every key has to be programmed into the ecu? I imagine that the ecu has a limited number of memory locations for keys, and maybe they need to connect their scan tool to wipe those spaces for the new key?
I am only making this up and brainstorming, but it seems plausible to me.
Once you have 2 keys that work, you can buy chipped keys from Amazon or on eBay for as little as $10, and program an extra one for yourself. You MUST have two working keys to make extras. This will prevent you from ever having to pay them to hook up the scanner to program a key. You can program as many as 8 keys. I lost one of my two original keys and it cost me $275 at the time. Had I known, I could have made another one so I would always have 2. While you will have to get a locksmith to cut the key, you can program it yourself as long as you always have at least 2 working ones.
They have to hook their scanner to program the keys whether there are too many or not. So, they charged you extra$$ to take a few seconds to do that. I had a similar issue with the '09 I bought that was a repossession. The dealer wanted it towed to their facility and wouldn't give a price. I had a local locksmith come out and he cut the keys from the vin and programmed the keys to the truck. I had him cut and program two keys. Cost was $65.00 for first key and $25.00 for second key. It saved the tow bill and saved a ton of $$ on dealer costs.
After reading this thread I bought two blanks from Amazon. (32 bucks)
Had them cut (1.99 each)
Googled how to program them. (free)
Need both keys to program the new keys. No problem..... Big problem, key wasn't where I thought I had put it.
Trip to the dealer to have another one made (100 bucks)
If you have both keys for your truck, buy a couple more program them and tuck them away.
Programing the new keys only took minutes. Waiting for the dealer to cut one key and program it took over an hour.
