Engine revs up at idle
Engine revs up at idle
I have a 2006 f-250 6.0. About 2-ish months ago, it started revving up while I was parked and hooking up a trailer. It ended up needing an ICP sensor and pigtail wires. Was fine after that until around 10 days ago, it died when I was driving down the road and wouldn't start back up. That time it was the IPR. Got it back Friday, drove home (40 min) and didn't need to drive it until today. I fired it up, and we're back to the revving/surging. I decided not to take it on the road, really tired of being stranded. Any ideas? Could it be the icp again? Something else? I'm so tied of throwing money at this thing.
I don't know what ICP he replaced it with, sorry. Would I unplug the ICP and then start it? And if it doesn't do the idle surge then that's probably the problem? (Sorry if that's a dumb question - I know next to nothing about vehicles)
I had a small surge at idle (park or in gear) a couple months ago. RPMs would cycle up to 800+ and back down to 625 (or whatever typical idle is). It was most pronounced after a long drive on the interstate. I changed the oil shortly after (4500 miles on oil charge) and problem went away and hasn't come back. It was first oil change after purchasing truck, so I'm unsure what was in it, although the filter was a Wix. The oil change/surge fix could be completely coincidental. Hasn't come back in 1500 miles since. Your mileage may vary, good luck.
Yes, unplug the sensor and start the truck. Drive it around a bit to test and see if that cures the issue. If so, replace the sensor and clear code.
Hope you replaced that WIX filter with an OEM filter and a new cap? Most likely the cap wasn't holding down the filter correctly and allowing the drain back valve to remain open.... you were starving the truck for oil, why it was fluctuating.

I replaced both filter and cap with Motorcraft due to the good knowledge on this site. Didnt realize cap was Wix until all the oil was drained into the pan. Good thing for friends and an O'Reilleys that had one cap in stock on Saturday morning.
Thank you, WatsonR. It started up and sounded much happier. I had to search google images to see what I was looking for, and stand on a bucket to reach it, but now I know what needs to be done. Again, thanks.

765indy you should look into a Gauge setup it will help keep costs down if you can see problems early and catch it before other stuff gets wiped out
one thing usually leads to another type deal
