Dana 60 swap?

Hey guys, I have a question. I have a 76 f250 that has a Dana 60 rear and it's been blowing out oil so I replaced the front seal and it worked for a while but it's leaking really bad now so I think I must have some bearings going out making the seals go out. So I wondered about just swaping axles. Can I swap a 79 f250 extended cab Dana 60 over to my 76 f250 Highboy frame or would that not bolt right up? If you could help me out I'd much appreciate it.

Make sure the breather line is open/clear before you go swapping stuff. The breather is attached to the brake line connector on the axle tube.

Let us know how that came out and if you still want to swap axles.

The 78-9 60's bolt right in. I just had to move one shock mount on the frame when I swapped it into my 73. They are pretty rare so unless you already have one be prepared to pay top dollar unless you get real lucky

Yessir, they are. He'll have to move the spring perches from the '79 D60 inboard two inches (each) to fit his narrower highboy frame.

I have an inkling his breather is stuffed up and didn't want to give the OP an information overload.....yet .

Why would you have to move one shock mount?

Me bad thought it was the front axle. For the rear a 14 bolt from a cab and chassis (34" frame) bolts in. It is a couple inches narrower though.

The rear axle vent fits thru a hole in the brass connector block that is part of the rear brake hose, then threads into the housing.

My vent tube was rusted shut when it first started leaking acouple months ago. So I replaced that and replaced the front seal behind the drive shaft. And it slowed down the leaking but it never stopped. But lastnight i got home and it had slung oil all be over the place and it was dripping pretty fast out of that front seal again. So I'd guess I've got bearings going out and making the seal go out. So is it cheaper to swap axles or rebuild the axle with bearings and seals? I've heard it's kinda had to shim the axles and stuff back up so I'm not sure if I'd be very good at doing that or not. So if I did swap axles it should all be the same I'd just have to move the shock brackets over to fit my narrower frame?

Shock brackets and spring perches would have to be moved over to fit my frame. So It would be a good but it of work to swap it over with a 79 D60.

Did you check that breather tube ? If it's clogged it will build psi in the axle.
