Power Steering Diagnostics - 1977 F250 highboy

Looking for some help to understand what I should do next to determine what is the failed part with my power steering?

Situation: Driving steering was working 100% with out any issues, while turning right, I lost all power steering.

What's been done: I have changed out the power steering pump and all the hoses, including the ones to the cylinder. No change, power steering still nothing.

Before I just start spending money on replacing the P/S control valve or the cylinder, is there a way to easily diagnose or determine what I should do next?

I have the original Bendix P/S system for 1977 F250 4x4 highboy.

Did you try bleeding the system? If you were moving and had a noticeable lack of power steering, it sounds like air to me. If you hadn't messed with it recently though, it means that air is getting in from somewhere, so I'd be checking for leaks.

And just to clarify, you were turning right and lost power steering, but now you have no power steering whatsoever? Or you still only have issues while turning right?

There were no visual leaks of fluid coming out. Reservoir was full and stayed the same level before and after the failure.

I have now changed all the lines and the P/S pump it did not help. I flush the system twice and bled it while the front end was off the ground.

There is completely no power steering in either direction.

Thanks.

Its only power assist to start with, not actually power steering. Does it only occur turning in one direction or in both directions? My guess would be the control valve has air or dirt in it.

Correct power assist. My choice of of words are based on the fact all references are to power steering whether it be assist or full.

It does not function in both directions.

Are you suggesting I need to replace the control valve? I think I have eliminated the possibility of air, I have purged the the system, and the circumstances when it failed it was during a turn and there was no leak or loss of fluid in the reservoir.

Do you know a way to test the control valve or the cylinder before I spend the money on one or the other?

Thanks for the help.

I would just diassemble the control valve and ensure the o-rings are good, do the re-build kit with the new ball stud.

I am having similar problems with a 1976 Bendix Highboy - did you ever resolve the problem?
