2 speed rear dif issue

I have a 1974 c600 361 ford. I recently drove my truck loaded cross country from North Dakota to Washington DC. I destroyed the transmission in the process. I am also thinking I messed up the rear differential in the process as well. Here is why. I cant get the 2 speed to engage or disengage. I trouble shoot I raised the rear end off the ground so the wheels could spin freely. I then placed it into gear so the wheels where spinning. I operated the switch for the 2 speed and when I did. I heard a constant clicking sound like it was stripped.
I was wondering what a couple of things.
1. I am thinking its the sun gear is stripped out.
2. Can I replace just the sun gear?
3. Do I need to remove the rear Carrier to do so?
4. I think this is a eaton 15201i correction it think its 16244

Moved to the Large Truck forum, where I think you'll get a lot more information.

Google "eaton two speed" and you will find various PDF's that show how to pull the electric shift motor. You may find your problem there.

Did you have trouble shifting it?

Does the truck move currently or does the driveshaft spin with no movement?

Yes I do have trouble shifting it. I think it might be stuck in high gear. It doesn't have the strength it should.
When I raised the rear end off the ground and with the wheels spinning I engaged the high/low button. It sounded like the "wheel of fortune" spinning around if that makes sense.

That sound is the sound of the two speed hung up and unable to shift. Now it could be something else too, as I am not hearing it, just recalling how the axle in our '58 sounded when the shift went bad.

Check these videos out. If you are not shifting the axle correctly, you will have the hang up problem. Short version, see post 5.

Don't think its internal or you would have heard an explosion. I would remove the
motor thats easy. Good examination and cleaning. Probably the bottom shaft
bearing it toast is so the shaft & fork will do all kinds of funky things. While your
at it replace the reversing switch (where the wires connect) Napa has those, thats
what turns the motor OFF at the end of its travel. If that goes south the motor is
still trying to turn & some times stripping the shaft & nut or both. Shaft looks like an
acme tread. Make sure you mark the two wires too. I had same thing happen &
the axle went into la la land >all came down to a bad 5 dollar reversing switch....

golden rule 'keep that gas pedal down' before even touching that red button
and you gotta be quick

So I raised the axles off the ground and put it in second gear. I let the wheels spin for a minute to see if it would lube everything up. I then flipped the switch and I heard and felt the truck drop into low gear so I think I got it to go into low. it still made that clicking noise but it felt it drop into low. Ill have to confirm it later when I get the new transmission fully operational.
thanks for all your help

If you have an Eaton two-speed electric switch motor like that posted by Number Dummy it's easy to pull that off. Take the cover plate off, hook it to a battery and run it up and down and see what happens. My guess is it's gunked up and bearings are shot. You can buy rebuild kits on eBay and rebuild is easy. Same thing happened with my '54 F600. I've got a few thousand shifts on my rebuild and still working great.

Have you yet figured out that you have worn brushes in the shift motor ? That was the happy finding with mine, which was also 'clicking'.
