IIRC, I placed the thermostat in the housing, POINTED END TOWARDS THE HOSE, and then put a bit of sealer on it, to hold it in place. I also glued the gasket to the housing.
Even with all that, I cracked the original thermostat housing, and ended up getting one from the parts store.
If you can get the lower bolt started, an open end wrench, or a 12 point wrench, is the only way to get it tight.
I don't wish that job on anyone!
I would use yellow weather strip glue to glue the gasket to the housing after the stat is in place.
I have not used this trick. Now I have heard you can use thread thru the bolt holes to hold the gasket in place. Guess you could also use thread around the housing & gasket in the center to hold the stat.

Glue would be very helpful. i'll try that if I ever have to do it again (Hope not!). I'm just hoping this does not leak and my timing gasket is good as well.
I found my aluminum housing at Rock Auto. It was priced close to those offered on Ebay. It came with everything except the bolts to mount it to the engine. Mine was for a explorer limited. I saw they also had the sporttrac units as well.
