Hi everyone, I am new to this site. I purchased a 06 6.0 about two weeks ago, bought from a dealership. I buy pick ups and rebuild upgrade and so on. I bought the pick up with the mechanics saying there are injectors out and it needs three new, they did a balance test, so I pulled the cab to paint frame and rebuild exhaust for pick up. I started work on the motor egr delete, oil cooler. Did a mechanical compression test on the engine. The read out I got wasn't good low compression on all of them the highest I got was 200psi. Now I'm not sure what my problem is, whether to tear down the motor or not. Just seeing if anyone could help me out with the trouble shooting.
What type of tester did you use? Was it thread in or rubber push in?
How long before you tested had it last been run?
Did you check at the glow plugs or the injectors? Did you remove one
plug at a time if you did it at the glow plugs or all at once?
What air filter assembly is on it and can you take a look at the turbo
compressor impeller to see if it been eroded by dust?
If the impeller is dusted it could be that the engine has been run without
proper filtering and that can be hard on rings and the walls.
Also this could be valve related and the bottom end could be fine. The only
way to tell 100% would be to remove the heads. But that gets into more money. The next best method would be a leak down test. That is what I would do with a
compression test coming up low or not equal.
If you have the intake off still this would be a good time to do a leak down test because
all the ports are separated and you could hear where air is escaping from. Turbo off and
you can put an ear to the "Y" pipe and hear any exhaust valve leaks.
