Can pick up this motor for a couple hundred bucks. Thoughts? Salvageable? I have another one from my truck that is not burned but has major issues internally.
this was in a vehicle fire. Engine still turns freely and is not seized.
As Slowpoke says. I wouldn't take it for free. If you pulled a valve cover you would see that any residual oil left on the head at the time of the fire would be cooked chunks of crud and the internals wouldn't look any better because of the heat.
I would take a pass on buying it, unless you have a specific use for it, and you are only after a few part that you knew would be okay. Honestly it's your money you can do what you like, it could work in your favor or it could be a a 499 pound lawn ornament.
As the others have said, a vehicle fire and the temps reached will have done a lot of damage and then you have the water poured on it to put the fire out which means that the engine would have been cooled down unevenly adding to the issues this motor will have
Not a chance I would ever trust an internal component from that salvage. Having experienced a motor vehicle fire (my motorcycle burned to the ground), I've seen first hand what fire can do.
With only 1.5 gallons of gasoline left in the tank of my bike the fire raged so hot that the steel handlebar cross bar began to sag. The aluminum pannier MELTED. All internal seals melted and the oil boiled over. The aluminum wheels started to taco under the weight of the bike.
If you don't mind taking it all the way down and checking every part.
Free would still be your best price. You won't know until you dig into it.
Save you time and $ and get one that has not been pre-toasted.
As others have said, I would pass on that one. The initial price is cheap, but something like that can be very expensive in the long run. There is likely to be all kinds of hidden or unusual problems that you would not typically encounter with a "normal" rebuild. I'd keep looking.

That's just my two cents
Turn it into a coffee table. That's about the best use of that motor at this point.
I recovered a burning duramax out in the bush before. The engine was melted into a puddle. Electrical fire the guy said he put it out with 6 different fire extinguishers from people who passed and it just kept relighting itself.
