Slight 300 Makeover

I picked up an 83 Bronco a while back and when I got the motor started (carb rebuild and tune-up) it was spewing oil out of the rear main seal and leaking from the valve cover, lifter cover, oil pan, and any other place oil is present. I ended up pulling the motor to replace the gaskets and clean up 27 years worth of caked and baked oil.

Here is what I started with:
Bronco

300

Removed smog pump and other emission equipment

Degreased in the engine bay (not good enough)

Out with it

Lots of elbow grease

Stubborn spots

More elbow grease

Stripped

New oil pump and pick-up

Cast iron paint

Wrinkle finish on valve cover and lifter cover

Flat black coated efi exhaust manifolds

Distributor, wires, coil, fuel pump, etc.

Intake pretty much ready to go back in

Fred

I am glad you are on here. I have been e-stalking your build on FSB. I am interested more in how you de'smogged the engine. What did you do about the carb height after taking out the EGR valve? Also, what did you do to the carb after removing the smog?

The carb didn't need anything really. This year had a non-feedback carb so removing the smog equipment didn't affect it. For the spacer, I ran down to a local junk yard and snagged a non egr spacer from what looked to be a 200 or 260. It had a dual bolt pattern so it fit nicely. I made shorter studs. I used a brass plug for the egr port on the exhaust manifold. Will get pics of everything tomorrow.

Looks like you trimmed back the alternator bracket? I found a bracket off a '66-ish F100 sans AIR pump bracket that also looks pretty tidy.

Yes, trimmed the alternator bracket as well as the AC bracket. No meed for either since it will be a dedicated trail rig.

That's a pretty sweet looking engine. I really like the cast iron paint, wrinkle finish on the valve cover, and the flat black on the exhaust.

Good job--It looks great. The only thing that hurts is seeing you reinstall the oem intake and carb, but, to each their own. While I had it out I think I would swap the int/exh. bolts, and the fuel pump bolts to studs.

Use a drill to prime the oil pump and pump oil all the way to the head before your start up.

Nice. k

Wow that turned out fantastic! I had a straight 6 in this:

but that was a long time ago. My engine resembled the engine in it's "before" condition and doubt it ever looked as good as the "after" even when it was new.
