The EVER famous "clunk"

Well my first post on this forum so thanks in advance. I searched on here and wasn't able to find my EXACT symptoms. I currently have 2001 f250 4x4 ext cab long bed with 190k on the ever faithful 7.3. I use this truck for my feed pickup and im not to concerned with a lot of aftermarket mods just durability. I am trying to deduce a certain clunk I am having from the rear end of the truck. I am experiencing this during taking of and any type of sudden acceleration at low speeds. nothing in reverse or when I let off. U joints are good, rear end looks good, I changed fluid about 2k miles ago. any imput or ideas would be appreciated...thanks in advance!

the preload on my nut is adjusted correctly however I haven't greased my splines in a while is that the possible culprit?

Not sure how loud the clunk is but mine made a clunk and ended up being shocks both the shocks and the rubber mounts were shot. Just another option to look at.

It usually is the grease on the splines on these trucks, not always, as derek can attest, but if most other things are in good working order, it usually is a grease issue. You want to get the "good" stuff from Ford, people have tried all different stuff, but it always comes back to OEM on this particular item.

PS.- nice looking truck!!

Great, Thanks guys, Derek I did happen to check my shocks and I think I can rule that out. Is there are certain process for the greasing the splines or is it pretty straight forward?

Mine happened to be bad ball joints. I've also read the carrier bearing for the split driveline can make a similar sound. That's my next area to look for the clunk on mine...

I just got an 01 f350 manual 4x4 from a friend that has been sitting for years. I got it started and threw it into gear and "Clunk". It felt like it was in the drive train somewhere but I couldn't tell. Mine clunked in forward and reverse. Being very concerned I got down beside the truck and had a buddy roll it forward and back under power only to see the drive shaft jump slightly about where the carrier bearing is. I'm thinking grease is going to fix it up just fine as the bearings all seem to be in good shape. No slop anyway!

If you are coasting, tap the accelerator. If you hear/feel the clunk, grease the splines.

I had a clunk that nothing would fix until I added traction bars. The whole rear end gained a more solid feel, and I can go from accel to decel with no clunk. I might have bad rear spring bushings, but I sure like what the traction bars did for me.

I took my driveline in to replace the ujoints and carrier bearing and the shop stated the slip yoke had too much play and is common issue for these trucks. They replaced the slip yoke with a nice tight fitting slip yoke and there is no more clunk and no need to keep greasing. FWIW.
