I don’t know if this is the right forum but I’ll try it.
When I put the truck in reverse, back up, stop, and then put it into drive, I hear a “clunk” in the rear axle or perhaps the transmission area. Anyone have an idea what I am hearing or have a similar quirk?
How many miles on truck? I have fixed a few driveline clunks with a blue teflon grease applied to the spline of the driveline slip joint.remove rear section of driveline, add teflon grease and reassemble, this has worked on alot of them for clunk in drivetrain.......can't hurt to try it.

I've got 7800 miles on it. Thanks for the advice but i am not too mechanically inclined so i might let the dealership mess with it
I have the same noise as above posting... was thinking it was the limited slip, also. I also get a noise up front when I start off... I think it may be the ABS going through its self test. The reason I was thinking that, is that my car makes the same popping sound when I start off and I DO know it's the ABS going through its self test.

Poco
POCO... Well me too!!
Mine has a "popping/clunk" MOSTLY after backing out of the driveway, turning onto the street, on a moderate accell.. Sound familiar!! But it will do it from a straight pull as well.. Worse when "dead cold" but will do it after an hour or so cool down.. But again,, sometimes I get "surprised" with a small bump after setting just a short while!! On mine, it doesn't seem to be the rear end, or rear driveline related.. Nor e-brake dragging (was not applied) It sounds/feels to be midship or maybe upfront.. It's a torque bind clunk that I can even at times feel in my feet and the wheel.. ALMOST sounds like a hub poping.. I have to take mine in again next week and let Ford take a listen.. I talked to them today about pressuring Ford Engineering for some more info. on the Turbo/Drone fix.. I wrench all day... and ANY problems, noises, drones, leaks ect. are on Ford's dime until the warranty is gone..
Maybe I'll tie my creeper to the crossmember, and have someone drive my truck away so I can get a close "look see" at whats up!!
I also have the same thing. Dealer says its the front hubs.
Does sound like its coming from the front, but hard to tell because its so short lived, and with sound transfer ect.. I'm getting the same sound/sensation between the 2-3 upshift when cold for a couple of blocks.. Goes totally away after warm... Unless its two different issues.. (sounds the same) I can't believe the hub/s would cause both effects. My 2-3 upshift has a bit of a delay, and could cause a 'slack' condition that might magnify the sound/feeling.. I've checked my axles before driving off in the AM, and they both spin free.. It does seem that when the truck was new, it only did it once in a while.. It's way more frequent/louder now.. Everyday...
I told our service writer they have to the end of summer for all the 'Normal' issues to be fixed or I'm going for a DSB..
The 2005 is looking pretty attractive about now..........

That is EXACTLY what i am hearing and also when i hear it. At first i thought it was just a quirk in my truck but now i know that i am not the only one. I wondered if maybe it was the fuel sloshing around but it goes away after warming up so it can't be that.
I live in a rural area and it is tough for me to go to the city for a dealership. If you find out what it is PLEASE let me know.
Ditto for my '04 350 4x4. There's a hanger bearing on the aft section of drive shaft that has a rubber isolation mount around the bearing. This mount allows for enough movement that may be causing the clunk from reverse to drive when torque is applied. I haven't experienced the clunk after initial one when I leave my driveway, but it has done it every day since new (got 2400 miles on her now). Also, I park on a slight incline with the parking brake applied (rear end lower than front).

My rig doesn't have a carrier bearing... And it 'is' getting worse, at least in the frequency of times it does it throughout the day... But,, I had a couple of really substantial 'pops/clunks' with a good 'bump' on launch, on a trip I took this weekend (400 miles/17MPG Stock tune).. It used to only do it cold, and, as it was warming up, but now it'll do it anytime after a short 'sit' hot or cold.. It will be going back in after Memorial day for a checkup!! At least the saving grace is that if it gets worse ...it's easier to find...
It's Not The Hubs. I've Had Them Replaced Already. Now I'm Trying To Get Them To Tell Me Why My Truck Sits Noticeable Lower On The Left Side. They Ordered Some Magic "shim Kit", However, I Quickly Notified Them That A Rig Job On My $50,000 Truck Was Not Acceptable. Will Let You Know How It All Turns Out. I'm Extremely Aggravated And Dissapointed At This Time.
I have inquired on this clunk many times with the dealer many people have it it happens when backing out of the driveway in reverse and then to drive with in 5 to 10 feet I get the clunk. If this is your symptom this is more than likely your problem. A lot of research went into to this over many months. Ford refused to fix this because they have to pull the transmission so I got a free 75000 mile warranty GOOD LUCK!!
When the dealership Svc Director explained it to me it
made perfect since.. The clutch pack is made up of a
shaft spline and a clutch disk that has splines in it
as well. When the clutch get the VSS signal, that is a
result of getting a "DSS" signal from a sensor in the
rear-end which detects that the vehicle is moving it
triggers the Clutch pack to lock up. The clutch is
locking up everytime, but we don't often feel it or
hear it because if the shaft spline and the clutch
disk splines are aligned when it occurs, the
engagement happens smoothly, but if the splines are
not aligned, the clutch will turn until the splines
engages ( or lock) with the splines on the shaft. this
is what causes the clunk and explains why the noise in
intermindent because we never know at what point the
spines are aligned or not. When they adjusted my
clutch pack, it seemed to help or maybe even fixed it
because I haven't heard it since i picked it up, but
I'm told that there will be a new flash soon that will
either keep the clutch pack engaged or not engage it
all thus eliminating the clunk all together.
Feel free to print this and take it to your dealer it will save you a lot of frustration and downtime without your SDuty!!
