I know I've seen threads about this but couldn't find any.
My Dad's early 99 F350 clunks somewhere in the rear end. If you are stopped then put it in drive and take off you get a real loud clunk. I watched the driveshaft and axle when he did it and I could see some serious axle wrap. What could be causing this on a basically stock truck? Oh, and he recently snapped a shock. And where the shock mounts to the frame it is riveted, it snapped 2 of the rivets.
hehe, with your sig, you don't have a "basically stock truck" LOL. The clunk could be the joint were the 2 halves of the driveshaft are splined together. Ford put a blue sealant or lubricant of some kind on the splines, and as it gets worn off through the years, your driveline developes some slack leading to the infamous Super Duty clunk. Also with bigger tires, I'd imagine that it take more torque to spin them, thus causing your increased spring wrap. Hopefully someone else will chime in.
Look for a rusty powder or spray on all sides of the u-joint, more than likely thats the clunk. I would assume if you can find an after market shock mount it could probably
be bolted through the existing holes. Talk to your local parts house.
Hey Danny, its his Dads truck, . Hey Adam, tell your Dad to stop line locking it and this wouldn't happen, J-K.. Could be what Danny suggested but never heard of the shock mount rivets being blown out unless the shock bottomed out, subscribing and good luck..
Did you check to see if you have some broken spring leaves? That could allow the axle to wrap excessively. Hate these things that go clunk in the night, or any time.....
Like Mike said it's my Dad's. He just has my old 4 inch straight pipe, 6637 and some banks crap chip. I will check that stuff out though Danny, thanks.
Alright Kris, sounds good. If Mike(Big Poppa) comes down I will tag along with him. If he doesn't then I will give you a call and find out when is good for you. Thanks man!
Any other ideas guys? I didn't see any play in the driveshaft anywhere, but something is definitely going on there to snap a shock and bust up the shock mount.

Was anything loaded or dropped in the bed hard?? How about backing up and hitting a high curb or running over something??, can't think of anything else..
This is a stretch but bear with me. When I put the air bags on my son's F350 I noticed that the shock mounts on the axle weren't in the same alignment. They are clamped on to the axle with big exhaust pipe clamps. One seemed a little loose and may have moved, so don't know if they were originally aligned or not. Could one of yours have moved for some reason and then a hard hit up or down caused the upper mount to break? Wouldn't think so but if the normal travel of the shock wasn't available, the hit just might have done some damage. I know, I know, but I said it was a stretch......
