I my instrument cluster out on my 91 to replace some bulbs. I had to remove the speedometer cable from the transfer case to get enough slack to get the cluster out. Now my speedo jumps around like crazy going down the road. Does it have to be reinstalled a certain way, or is it possible I damaged the speedo when I had the cluster out (I had the clear plastic sheild off, even though I know now I did not have to remove it). I think I may have bumped the speedo pointer once or twice while working, could that have messed it up at all?

You might have pulled the bottom end of the cable out of the VSS on the t-case - it's only held in by a hairpin clip. Just push it straight back into the VSS and make sure it has enough slack to move with the drivetrain.
Hitting the needle wouldn't cause that.
