Hello, I'm upgrading the alternator and have a quick question. Do you need to run a dedicated ground off the back of the alternator? All the diagrams show a neg feed but I haven't seen anyone add it in actual pictures. Or does the case of the alternator ground to the block via the way it's mounted?
I have switched out the stock pulleys with a March Performance Serp set-up. Everything is aluminum, does that make any difference regarding the ground and last... I also changed to an aluminum intake. Should I change the location of my stock grounds. Stock I had one from the chassis (fire wall) to the rear of the intake and the negative battery terminal also went to the intake at the coil.
I have all the parts and upgraded wire/fuses but was wondering about the grounds now that everything is aluminum..
Switching to aluminum won't make any difference, just use some dielectric grease on the terminals to prevent corrosion.
Aluminum is used for the bus runs in power plants now days, especially on the larger units (over 400 mw). Copper capable of carrying that load would be too heavy.
I painted my alt case so made a small ground strap from the ear on the back to the block. Easy enough. The ear is where a brace bolted to on the Taurus I removed the alternator from
