Does the alternator need a ground wire? My old and new alt has a post for ground but there was never a ground wire in place. Im under the impression that the alt bolts/bracket will provide a ground.
Everything seems ok but im thinking of changing the external regulator just to be sure. How do I know if the regulator is bad, and if replaced how common is it for the new one to be bad. Im asking this because im not sure if i should leave well enough alone or take some precautions.
thanks
Alternator case is ground so no additional ground should be required. If everything is ok, i.e. battery is staying charged then why change a regulator. The Ammeter on these trucks barely shows charge/discharge needle movement under normal operating conditions. If you're worried about the electrical system install a Voltmeter; much more valuable as an indicator of system performance than the stock ammeter or idiot light.
I've always been a fan of running a wire from the alternator ground lug straight to the battery. it's alot more direct of a route than stock and adds piece of mind for me.
If you have any of my luck the last few weeks. Don't worry you'll have a lot to do. If you run out of thing come to my place I have, A/C work, I have an C-6 that needs rebuilding, If you leave today by the time you get here there will be much more I'm sure.
Its not so much i want work, but I want to do the work while the weather is still nice. I dont like the idea of being stuck with a dead battery when its 20 below.
