Okay, so I have 96' F250. Alternator went bad last night so I watched a buncha videos and read some articles on how to replace it. Got the serpentine belt out of the way, removed the a bolt so that only the pivot pin was left. I got the pivot pin almost all the way out (literally about two threads to go) and it's flush against the radiator. I didn't see anything in my research saying I should have to remove the radiator so I feel like I'm missing something really obvious. Any hints?
Oh... riiiiiiight... It's a inline six for the engine. And I could be mistaken, but it seems like the pivot pin goes through both the alternator and the half moon bracket which attaches to the engine. I think
As long as the bolt has cleared the bottom tab of the alternator you should be able to remove the alternator. The bolt may still be sitting in the bracket but should be back far enough to be out of the way. See if you can get a small prybar on the bottom of the alternator and try to move it out. If it doesn't move or starts to come out ****-eyed you'll know the bolt is still in the way.
Yup! That was it. It just needed some prybar love. Thank you!
I figured the tabs for the mounting bracket had got bent inward over time which is why the alternator did not want to come out on its own. Good to hear that's all it needed!
