5.0 to 5.0 HO Swap

I just bought a '93 F150 XL, 4x4, with a 5.0/AOD that in addition to a trans issue (won't go into reverse), has a knock in the engine. This was bought as a project, so I was aware of what I was getting into, lol. Anyways, I found a 5.0 HO motor that's stock and I'd like to replace my existing 5.0 with the HO motor after I go through it and freshen it up. The HO motor is stock and has the factory roller cam, which I'm hoping will work with the factory '93 speed density computer. Can I just transfer the truck intake over to the HO motor and use the HO firing order with the '93 speed density computer?

The H.O. was speed density from '86-89 and mass air from '90-93. The cams are different, but not by much. The SD cam actually has a more aggressive grind. All of them are roller. I've run speed density cams in mass air engines, but I've never tried it the other way around. As you've noted the ignition firing order is also different (H.O. is 351), so the fuel injection firing order is different as well. Since the truck EFI is not sequentially injected like the H.O., you might get away with the truck EFI and H.O. cam, but I'd research that before committing.

I did it with my '93 Bronco. Threw a '95 HO into it

Worked great, but we had to swap the plugs and injector harness to account for the 351 firing order.

Ran like crap until then. Afterwards, ran great

What did you pull the injector harness from and was your truck SD or MAF? The injector batches are the same for both 5.0 and 5.8 SD trucks so cam firing order doesn't matter as far as the injectors are concerned with the truck SD system.

Bronco was SD
Donor F-150 was MAF

Originally just swapped longblock in with no changing anything. The motor ran, but was only on like 5 cylinders. Then we discovered the HO had a 351 order. Still ran like crap

So we pulled intake and wiring off 93 motor and transferred everything over to the 95 motor. Fired up and ran perfect

Keep in mind this was in 2001. Completely trial by error

First a little nit to pick.. that F150 motor wasn't an actually 5.0HO, yes it has the 351/HO firing order but it doesn't have several other parts that make the HO unique. And yeah you broke the first rule of engine swaps.. never use any wiring that comes with the donor motor. This is a rule because Ford is famous for changing the wiring slightly from year to year, but in your case there is no way it was gonna work because there are major differences between an SD and MAF wiring harnesses and only injectors 1 and 2 were firing.. those are the only 2 wires that are common between SD and MAF.

Good on you for figuring it out, many others would have cursed EFI and put a carb on it.

This thread has blown my mind! I'm a "gearhead" from the late 60's-early 70's and had no idea things have changed so much! Our meat & potatoes were 390's, 410's and SCJ428's and the was so much interchange. My hat's off to you younger guys

Had no choice. Bought an awesome XLT Bronco with a blown motor for next to nothing. Wanted her on the road

But yeah, I grew up playing with 302, 305, 307, 327, and 350's. Had way too much fun with those. EFI is nice, but it can be a pain
