I hope this bit of information will help someone else. Last week, my truck was in the paint shop for repair to the driver's side door where a lawnmower had thrown a rock. When the truck was returned, the key would not unlock the door and the inside handle required more force than normal to open the door. The door lock button/rod would barely move up or down when trying to lock or unlock the door.
The key, when inserted in the door with difficulty, was slightly off center to the left. With diligence, the door could be unlocked and opened with the key still in the door, but when the key was rotated to be able to remove, the door would lock.
It turned out that while removing and reinstalling the key cylinder and door handle for painting, the lock latch rod [#4 in this picture: Truck Parts and Truck Accessories] had been bent. Once reshaped, everything works as per normal.
This caused me to think... back in 2007, while having my son's 1984 F150 repainted, when returned and still to this day, occasionally the door locks refuse to unlock when the key is inserted. It is mostly the driver's side, but every now and then, the passenger side, too. He has just "lived with this", since it does not happen too frequently. I now think that the lock latch rods must have been "tweaked", just not as badly as mine was.
I believe I will try to find NOS replacements for his and just replace the suspected parts.
Would someone please supply the correct part numbers for these lock latch rods for the 1984 F150 [NumberDummy, Gary Lewis, Chris]? Both driver's and passenger's side. Thank you!
I was downsized out of the newspaper business a few weeks ago (that industry is REALLY hurting) and am doing a lot of new-job-search-stuff these days so I hope Bill or Gary or somebody can help you sooner than I can but let me know if not, OK? Thanks!
I am so very sorry regarding the displacement and look forward to hearing good news regarding where you "land". Prayers are being lifted up!
Regarding the parts/engineering numbers request... there is no hurry. After all, it has been since 2007 and my son, the truck's owner, is leaving in a couple of weeks for a year long job overseas, so there will be plenty of time.
As for the web site, if you realize I've overlooked something on a page or notice a topic that would be good to document, please let me know. I've not been adding much of late as the site seems to be answering most of the questions I come across - at least those that can be answered by documentation.
I had put up a lot of pictures over the years and most of them are gone by now, and you've approached me in the past about maybe integrating some of that old stuff into your own site and that's a great idea that I never pursued because there were a lot.
The ones I can remember offhand:
- Disassembly & explanation of starter solenoids (I dissected one and took pix & explained how they work).
- Steering column stuff - how to forcefully bust off the key lock cylinder and drill it out, IIRC this also includes a fair amount of steering column stuff that comes here up on a semi-regular basis.
- The Inferred Mileage Sensor that lights up the Emissions light after a period of time.
- Certain electrical circuits concerning the stop/tail/marker/etc. lamps but this already covered with your EVTMs.
- Fan belt routing & pulleys on the various engines
- You have all the cert label stuff covered, thank you.
- The full Ford procedure on how to pull computer codes, I think I have that stuff on Photobucket still.
- Stuff about diagnosing problems with the various sensors & solenoids the computers use.
- That one thread that had me & Bill Vose maybe a year ago about how 1985.5 - 86 variants have a weird-*** fuel filter down near the tank(s?) someplace.
The more prayers I can get, the better, thank you.
