Hello,
I'm new to this, so bare with me. I have an 82 F250 with a carbureted 302 crate engine, 4x4, and a manual transmission. I just got the truck from my brother in law, gave her a tune-up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and fuel filter), adjusted the carb, and put some fresh gas and orielly fuel additive, because she sat for awhile and wasn't taken care of. Since before I bought, it has had an issue with randomly dying once it warms up, however, it fires right back up after it dies. I can be driving, it dies, and I can start it back up without ever pulling over. And it doesn't sputter, or anything, she just falls right on her face. The only other thing I have noticed, the turn signals, fuel, oil pressure, and temp gauges with stop working some times, but if you hit the steering column they will work again. No idea if they coincide, or not. Please help, driving me crazy.
Thanks!
Easy fix. Your ignition switch is sticking and once released after starting, is not returning to the "sweet" spot. These trucks came with grease for the rod attaching the key tumbler with the actual ignition switch located under the dash on top of the steering column. I believe there is a thread in the "stickies" at the top of this forum page.
Another common problem after the engine is pulled out is the ground strap. Look for one hanging behind the engine, bolted to the firewall. It should be bolted to one of the bellhousing bolts back there, but any bolt to the metal part of the engine will do. This grounds the cab, the cab is sitting on rubber body mounts. There is no way it can get a good ground without this strap bolted to the block.
