Ok. I have replaced the clutch on my son's 89 ranger. I can't get the bleeding down right. I have someone pump the pedal then hold it to the floor. I open the screw then close it again. And repeat. And it still doesn't work. The one thing that is interesting. I can sit in there and pump it a whole bunch then hold it to the floor and I can shift through all the gears or start it with it in gear. As long as I keep the pedal to the floor. The minute I let it up and try again it starts grinding or won't shift again.
This was supposed to be a project truck. We started out replacing the rear brakes. Took off the break drum and all the pieces fell out on the floor.
In the process of replacing the clutch somehow, and I have no idea how, the water pump went out. I think the rig may be possessed.
The perfect truck! It knows your needs and complies with your wishes. If you were to get everything fixed, it'd no no longer be a project truck, right? (Sorry I can't help with the real problem, but it sounds like it's sucking air on the up-stroke...)

Or, when i did the clutch in my 87 & could'nt get the last of the air out i took it to a mom & pop repair shop & paid the guy 30 bucks to finish the job.
