Hi my name is josh,New to the site. I have a old farm truck it's a 86 ford f150 with the 351w with 4 barrel carb, and what I want to know what vacuum lines wires etc can I take out in the process of rebuilding engine and transmission, and I don't want all I don't want all that is there, it's my first truck and learning as I go any help would be appreciated
I am not up on that year truck but I want to say some of it is run by a computer like distributor / timing and maybe some things the carb does.
If so then you would need to go with non-computer controlled dist. & carb to remove the computer and the wiring to it.
If you have electric fuel pumps the computer may also control them too.
I think the best thing is to get the factory manuals for your truck. Read thru them so you know what you are looking at and what they do.
Once you know what the parts are called and do you can come back and ask "can I remove xxxx and if I do what do I need to do to do this".
Ford never controlled their factory 4bbls with a computer that I ever knew of. That being said, if you keep the factory carb, you need to keep all the vacuum lines, you can't get rid of any of them. If you decide to run a aftermarket carb, then you can eliminate some of them.

Well I did say I was not up on that year truck
I would still get the factory books so you know what you are looking at and what they do.

Why not leave it the way Ford designed it? Much easier in the end, to deal with what's there, as opposed to removing this and that, then when there's a problem, where do you start to look?
My 86 f-150 had the 351W 4bbl carb and it looked like a rubber vacuum jungle under the hood. I replaced my engine and trans from a 69 wagon with a 429 and eliminated LOTS of vaccum lines. I used the L&L conversion kit and a remote oil filter.
I have a decal on the front fascia just ahead of the radiator that shows the vacuum lines and vacuum solenoids that looks as good as when it was new. You can learn a lot from that schematic
if you are going to keep the original carb. If you replace it with a 600 Holley, you can eliminate a bunch of lines.

I want to keep the 351 w. I'm rebuilding it and boring every thing is it.. And j have a car on order now.. Just wanting to know if there is a way to get rid of the vacuum jungle under the hood
My 86 f150 is an old farm truck and a lot of emission parts are no good... I was just wondering if I would be able to get rid of all that stuff instead of spending the money to replace it all. Can I take all of it out . And would it be bad to do so
If your state or county conducts emission testing you'll want everything to be present and working. Without regard to the law depending on the year the emission components can't very easily be removed or bypassed without causing technical problems. Lots of people are on the hunt for vintage emission components due to the fact they can't register the truck because previous owners removed them and threw away.
I leave in Tucson as so it's easy to get around all that. As it is my truck doesn't pass emissions so I'm not worried about that.. What kind of problems and how could I fix them
I have the same truck. Does anyone have a picture of what the engine is supposed to look like? The guy I bought it from ripped out the A/C compressor and left a ton of vacuum hoses disconnected everywhere.
