Howdy folks
So bare with me this is my first post. So I have a 84 f150 with a 5.8l and standard transmission that I bought a while back. I've had nothing but troubles with the ignition and feedback carb. So what I'm wanting to do is swap intake carb and distributor for some aftermarket bits. Can you tell me what the computer will do once I unhook those items??? Will the gauges still work? Lights and such throughout the the truck I would think are controlled by the computer but I could be wrong. Any and all help is appreciated
These older vehicles are not like the new ones. The computer's job was only to control the distributor and the carb and some emissions devices. It had nothing to do with the lighting or the gauges in your truck.
Put a regular carb and a regular dist with it's own module, and you will be fine.
You will have to do some research and decide what ignition you want to run. That will determine what you need to know about the wiring you need to modify.

As Franklin said do your home work for wiring. Most I think use a relay to power the HEI.
Everyone says all universal carbs need tweaking after they are installed. If you want perfection I guess that is true, but each time I have put a holley 1850 600 cfm carb on a small Ford or chevy, it ran so good I did not do any tuning at all.
Well thats awesome news!! Hopefully it will all show up today and with a bit of luck I will get it installed tonight. Will post some before and after pics. Thanks for all the help.
P.S. You do have to adjust the idle stop and the idle mixture screws. And also check/adjust the float levels. So I guess I lied in the previous post. Sorry.
I actually did the same thing to my 82 F100 a couple years ago. I replaced the ignition system with an HEI. They actually make 2 different versions... one with a cast gear and another with a brass gear (I think). If I remember correctly, one is for roller and the other is for flat tappet. I can't remember now which is for which though (been too long). I wanted to clean up my engine and get rid of anything I really didn't need.
I ended up buying a Summit Racing 600CFM carb (sum-m08600vs) and the aftermarket fuel pipe with the psi gauge.
Those were literally 2 of the best investments I've made to this truck. The HEI only needs 2 connections (1 if you don't use a tach). The power to the HEI I used the exisiting 12v power that was originally going to the ignition module.
Like I said, I've had it this way for going on 2 years now and it's been working great and my engine bay is uber clean! (of course other than the dirt!)
Here's some pics... it's a work in progress..
And BTW: Another good mod is to go ahead and do the 3G alternator upgrade. You can see mine in one of the pics. Another great investment!
alright guys. So everything is finally swapped over and up and running!! Man she runs perfectly as well. But there is a new problem. Once she is to operating temp she won't restart. Any ideas?? Ive added a heat shield to the started adjustmented the timing in everyday possible. Please help me!

Good to hear you got it running, bad a no start hot.
It might be best to start a new post on this new issue.
Put in the post the year of truck, motor/trany and all the up grades you did to get rid of the computer.
Also a no start hot is not enough information? Not crank no start or crank and no start? Two different ways to look at a fix.
