I found this brand at my local Advance Auto Store. It states that is can be used to replace R12 or R134 refrigerant for a 83 f150 5.8. Has anyone tried this and is it compatible for my truck?
Used to be you could buy a "conversion kit" and DIY. I did this back in the early 2000's to my 91 Pontiac Firebird. The kit consisted of screw on adapters for the inlet/outlet A/C ports along with new caps for the same and a sticker you can apply to the car letting others know it has been converted. Once the new inlet/outlet ports are on, you can connect the newer style 134a cans and hoses. Of course you'll want to "reclaim" any R12 left in the system before filling it with 134a and oil. Now you can enjoy your "not quite as cool" 134a charged A/C and warmer cab.
I just picked up one of the "conversion Kits" that you have mentioned. I haven't yet had a chance to try and get the old r-12 reclaimed and refilled with the 134a, but as it ahs been over 110 this week, I'm thinking it will be worth a shot.
Should work just fine. My truck with dealer A/C with a small condenser puts out 50 to 58 degree air out the vents depending on how long you drive it and how hot it is outside. 100* outside it blows 58 all day long out the vent if its under 100* it can get to 50* long as the sun doesn't heat the cab up faster than the A/C can work. but 50 to 58 degree air is good though. Don't know how many newer Chevrolet wreckers I work on at work that on a 100* day with limo tinted windows is only capable of blowing 58* air out the vents.
Especially if you go to a place like Pepboys just as summer is winding down you can pick up a 30lb jug of R134a for under $100. I still got one I bought three summers ago that I got for $80.
