Unhappy 302 idle

New to the board, I hope you guys can help. I have a 93 F-150 w/302. The problem is when you first start the truck up the idle surges hi/low, hi/low. After the truck is warmed up it doesn't do it. Also at times when I start the truck and head down the road it will stall at the first stop sign I come to. it starts up and runs fine. I have noticed lately that when slowing down to turn the transmission doesn't seem to down shift properly. The truck has about 105 K on it.

Have you done anything to it ? ex: plugs, wire etc...
You might need to remove and clean the idle air control motor mounted on the throttle body

Sound like the Throttle Position Sensor... Mine would do the exact same thing as yours. And sometimes I would be going down a hill and my truck would stall out too!! I just ran a scanner on it and it gave me the TPS code. Changed it out and runs great now.

unplug the vaccum to the EGR and drive around, If that seems to fix the problem, replace the EVR sloeniod. it is leaking too much vacuum or is stuck wide open.

Cleaning the IAC is a good first step. I did that on my '88 helped for a couple days only. Then I found the EVR was stuck open (full vacuum). unplugged and capped the vaccum line, runs like a champ. I will replace the EVR sometime when I have more $$. Yes, I get a check engine light, but I didn't pay any money to keep it from stalling.

Thanks for the help everyone. My Father-in-Law bought this truck new and sold it to me last year. I am going to ask if he ever had the plugs and wires change on it. Then I will check the other suggestions out. About the TPS, is it on the rear driverside of intake manifold. If it is I think he must of had it change beffore because I found used one in the truck. Anyhow, I will get some info from him and let you know what I find out.

The TPS is mounted under the throttle body. I would pull the codes first before replacing any sensors though. Click here to learn how without a scanner.
