94 E150 conversion van. Yesterday while driving to town the engine strted poping and back firing when excellerating. I was able to get it home and parked it for the night. Now it will not start. Turns over and acts like it wants to start. Let up on the key and it acts like it is dieseling and quites but will not start. There is a heavy fuel odor outside the van but smells kind of like a catalatic converter smell mixed in. I have a right rear exhaust manifold leak. Could I have burned a valve? What are the symtoms of a burned vavle?
PULL CODES. Ford Fuel Injection has instructions. also pull the vacum line off of your fuel pressure regulator and check for the presence of fuel. if fuel is present your fpr is bad and dumping to much fuel into the motor. also check your oil for gas, if gas is present do not try to start the engine till the oil is changed otherwise the gas will wash the bearings and cause failure.
also check the fuel pressure at the rail with a gauge with the key on. pull your spark plugs to see how they look as well.
This is were I am at. Checked the fuel pressure, fine. Checked compression, fine. When the van sits for a long time It takes quite a bit of turning over to start it. When it is idling it runs fine. When I give it gas it coughs and chokes. It backfires sometimes. I can nurse it to rev up. What I can't understand is after it sits and cools off it takes a lot of turning over to start. Its almost like it is flooded but it is fuel injection and I don't touch the gas. I thought it might be my fuel regulator but I did some tests and it seems to check out. Any help would be great.
I checked codes when I first started nothing. Yesterday I pulled some vacuum lines while it was running to the MAP sensor, the EGR valve etc. Check codes and the codes were there. Today I took the fuel pressure regulator off and applied vaccum to it. Held vaccum fine. Applied vaccum to the fuel side of the regulator and suck some gas out of the regulator. I reinstalled the regulator and the van runs much better now. Doesn't cough and choke when throttle is applied. No more back firing. Seems to be running fine but could be a little smoother. If it starts to act up again I am going to change the regulator.
The problems back. Out of the blue. Give it light gas not under power will rev up slowly. Step on it hard and it coughs and chokes and backfires sometimes but will eventually clear up. Let up on throttle and re-apply gas on does it again. I change the fuel pressure regulater and I still have the problem. Help anyone!!!!!!!!!!
This is pretty much the exact same problem I am having. Did you have to remove the upper intake manifold to replace the fuel regulator? Have you checked your exhaust system for clogs, mainly that cat? I'm just in the process of replacing my air bypass valve and TPS. I am going to check for fuel in the regulator today. If you do, or have fixed your problem, let me know. This thing is driving me nuts.
First thanks for the replies. Second, the problem ended up being my coil. It would work intermintantly and then start acting up. When I look back I could tell that it was happening to different degrees most of the time. I think the coil cost about $40.
