I have a 49 F1 with a 302/AOD with Lokar AOD shifter. the shifter has 1,D, and then (D). When I hold it in first it stays there, then when I shift to D it goes to 2nd gear and then to 3rd gear shortly. It will stay in 3rd untill I shift to (D) overdrive. Is this normal? I'd like to wind it out in 2nd and have control of the 2nd to 3rd shift.
When the 1-2 shift happens, pull it back in low and keep gassing it. When you're wound out, put it in drive to get 3rd gear. Then when you ready move it up one more notch.
Hey Gogoat,
We've got an AOD in our '50 F1. Hmm... I'd be pretty cautious about jamming it into Overdrive. These are famous for the overdrive belt coming off the Servo under hard shifting. We upgraded our Belt to the 2 inch version & it's made from Kevlar.
That said - Baumann Engineering has a great site explaining all the things you can do to control or change the shift points. We have a more aggressive clutch set in our's - not sure I'd do it again - it's a bit of a neck snapper.
There also is a company named silverfox that makes replacement
solid shift bodies that can be more fine tuned for whatever shift pattern you want.
Good luck over there. Be gentle on your AOD .. just saying...
Hey Gogoat,
The shift pattern you describe above where your AOD shifts pretty quickly from 2nd to 3rd is
pretty much normal from our experience. We don't drive around with it in (O) overdrive unless
we know we are going on the highway above 50 mph. Around the neighborhood & city streets
we are in (D) which only goes as far as 3rd.
Hard shifting in (D) then jamming it into Overdrive is not advised. Gently shifting into Overdrive....
You can make these AOD more bullet proof but it's a lot of work ... basically changing out the guts
for the stouter set up of the AODE (the next generation computerized trans. from Ford).
Guys we had helping us blew (2) AOD's in the set up phase ($1800 ea). That cable is really sensitive &
you have to have the pressure set right or it will crater in a matter of miles. We gave up & went to a
very experienced Trans. place in town & had them adjust & set the pressure. You have the right set up with the Lokar shifter.
I put a valve body from Performance Automatic in mine. Shifts nice and firm, and shifts like you would expect an automatic to shift. No more quick shifts to 2nd and 3rd, and won't shift to OD until you reach cruising speed and let off the gas a little.
Thanks for the info. I'm still fine tuning my TV cable, never ending but fun to conqor.
Yes, that is why I went with the 4R70W as it has no shift cable. It is all electronic. Here is the link to the U.S. Shift (Baumann) website: The US Shift Transmission Control System

What he said. I had a Cougar and Thunderbird with AOD and thats exactly how you shifted to hold 2nd gear, then D for 3rd gear.
Ben, I agree with you. I leave it in drive around town, or it never goes above 1200 rpm.And shift to O/D with light thottle. These are really fun trucks to drive and to work on. Simple. This web-site is great. All you have to do is ask.
