I was there back in the late eighties and early nineties. I remember walking nearly half a mile (or at least it felt like it) to fill up gas cans for our boat. They would also send a six pack back with us for my dad, my how things have changed. Have fun on your adventures!
We got the air bags installed and brought the new baby (Cougar) home this afternoon. Up over the Altamont Pass, east bound, (worst road in the United States). Husband says the Big E did ok, a little light in the front end. He is going to try a few things with the hitch to bring the front end down a little.
This is an old thread, but I just had to post this recent experience.
I bought this new, it's a 2000 Excursion Limited V10 4x4. The trans was rebuilt at 140k, it has Gibson headers and their full exhaust along with a SCT/ 5-star tune. It also has Air-Lift air bags on the rear axle for stability. I have towed a LOT with this truck, our first camper was a 24' Outback, then upgraded to a 33' Citation. I have also towed open car haulers, but now we have a 26' enclosed car hauler. The "Beast" now has over 180k on the odometer and still is an animal!!
We just completed our fifth trip from Pennsylvania to Colorado and put over 5,500 miles on this in just under three weeks.
Being this was our LAST trip moving, we had to vacate our storage facility in PA and move everything we could pack. We ended up weighing the trailer once we got close to home, it weighed in at 16,560 pounds!!!! Plus, we had about 1,500 inside the Excursion.
I cannot believe the Beast handled all that!! I would not recommend anyone trying this, as the truck felt like it was AT it's limit, but it did pull and stop fine. Most importantly- it got us HOME safely.
I love this truck! Too bad the East Coast winters took their toll on it and it's rusting badly underneath.
