Alright. So I have a 1981 F250 Custom. The box is rotting out, so I found a replacement. Only problem is its a completely diffwent colour.
I like the colour it is currently, so I was thinking that after the bodywork gets taken care of, repainting it. Only problem is I can't figure out what the original paint scheme was.
According to the door tag, was it dual toned, light spruce and dark spruce, or is it interior and exterior colours? Where would the colour divides be?
4J on the left, and B7 on the right
Not the greatest picture.
Also, if anybody has any pictures that might show what either the original may have looked like, or a solid either light or dark spruce, I'd love to see them. I've tried Google, but I keep getting the same handful of unhelpful images.
It was dual-toned paint, the interior colors are in the BODY area of that label. Where were the dividing lines? No idea for certain but my guess would be above and below that aluminum trim stuff.
I will do it tomorrow I don't know how to capture a screen image from the PDF file for the parts and illustration guide but there is a section that shows the different combinations of trim and pin striping done on these trucks. But tomorrow when I get back home from out of town I will post the section and page number for someone that knows how to capture a screen to capture one and post if the link above doesn't already have this shown.
Few things come to mind here on this 2 tone paint thing. Your truck was not 2 toned. 4J is the only color listed on the sticker. The B7 is the DSO number. If 2 tone it would look like this with 2 numbers on the left side, 2L 1G DSO 22. Also as said the color break would be at moldings or a “pin stripe” decal. See below the truck the above sticker is from, break at molding top & bottom. If someone did repaint your truck the stock color, did they do inside the doors? Most of the time no so if you open a door you would see the 2nd color inside the door jamb. You can just make it out in this picture. Dave ----

Thank you, Fuzzy, I didn't look closely at the sticker nor did I look in any books, just went with what he said.

Well... yeah, that's usually how they're (supposed to have been) printed, but maybe 10% of the time you come across one where paint codes are spread WAY out, and the stuff in the last line is all shifted to the right... it happens enough that it made it easy to just go with what the guy was saying rather than trying to read that printing on the sticker.
It all good.
I was going to post my other 2 tone sticker but you cant see the DSO number because of the flash and being a PO panted the truck in primer and you can see it in person you cant see the door jamb for the 2nd color.
The above was the best I had of the 2 trucks and the poster should see what I was getting at.
I will keep in mind of the "shift" in printing of stickers for next time.

Having said that, if anyone does need to know about the different paint treatments, they are described here: 1981 Pickup Brochure - ???Gary's Garagemahal. Page 17 shows the colors, Page 18 describes the different paint schemes, and Page 19 shows them.

Thanks Dave. I didn't know. I'm kinda just flying by the seat of my pants, picking up bits and pieces as I go. Being solid makes so much more sense for what I am looking at. Must just be really faded.
What is a DSO number? What is it for?
Look ay the link Gary posted on the DSO as it may tell you what D S O stands for but a guess District Service Order? Hay it sounds good :0)
I got tripped up with the "body" code for the inside of the truck. I wanted to know what mine should be but could not find any thing pointing to the inside.
Who would think "body" would be inside?
BTW you can also look on Garys site to see what yours should be from the factory.
