AC clutch

I have an 04 F250 6.0L and for the last month or so when I turn on my AC it makes a high screetching noise but only last for a little bit. Had a friend that works on cars on the side take a look at it one day and he said it was the AC cutch trying to engage. Does this sound like what it could be? Also if it is can it be changed out without having to remove the compressor? What all is involved in changing it out?

How many miles on the truck?
Make real sure its not the belt squealing. If not then inspect the idler pulleys for smooth bearings. Then look at the clutch. They can wear, slip, become weak or break down electrically/magnetically. Most clutches can be replaced without compressor removal. The shim space (gap) between the two halves is a critical dimension and should be set with a thorough knowledge of that as well as having the proper feeler/thickness gauges. You need a wire gauge not a flat feeler gauge. Other than getting the gap correct its a pretty straight forward service. Inspect the connector too and replace if questionable. Google this for a visual.

The A/c clutch, either it engages with a rapid click, when everything is good , or it will drag , squeal while trying to engage.
I had a F150 , that did this, and Upton closer looking, I could see a rusty brown looking material on the face of the clutch hub.
I had to replace the clutch.
Bought the clutch hub assembly, and used the borrow program, for the removal / installation tool.

Will I need to remove the compressor to do this or can I do it with it in the truck?

Shouldnt need to remove the compressor as far as I know. Ive done clutches on several vehicles and all could be done with compressor in situ.
